What is the Florida medical marijuana ID card?
The ID card is the state's proof that you are a registered medical marijuana patient. It is issued by the Florida Department of Health through the Medical Marijuana Use Registry (MMUR), run by the Florida Department of Health, Office of Medical Marijuana Use.
The card is separate from your physician's certification. The certification is the medical order. The card is the state registration that lets you use it at a licensed treatment center.
How do I apply for the card?
You apply after a qualified physician enters your certification in the Registry. After the physician enters you in the Registry, you apply online in the Medical Marijuana Use Registry (or by mail) with a photo, proof of Florida residency, an e-signature, and the $75 fee. Online applications average about 10 business days to approve. Since July 27, 2026, you can only apply or renew if you have a current or scheduled certification with open orders in the Registry.
You cannot apply before the certification is entered, because the state checks for it. That means the order is always the same: exam first, Registry entry second, card application third.

What proof of residency does the state accept?
Most adults use a Florida driver license or Florida ID card. Adults prove Florida residency with a valid Florida driver license or Florida ID card. Seasonal residents without one may submit two proof-of-address documents (such as a lease, deed, recent utility bill, or recent government or bank mail). Minors submit a birth certificate or Florida K-12 school record plus a parent or guardian's Florida license or ID.
Make sure the name and address on your application match your documents. The rule is in section 381.986(5)(b) of the Florida Statutes.
How much does the card cost?
The state fee is $75, paid to the Florida Department of Health (plus a $2.75 convenience fee when paying online). It is set in Rule 64-4.011 of the Florida Administrative Code and paid to the Florida Department of Health.
This fee is separate from your physician visit. At Horizon Releaf, the initial evaluation is $85, down from $130.
How long does the card last?
The card lasts one year. One year. The state ID card must be renewed every year; the renewal application can be sent starting 45 days before the card expires.
The one-year term is set in section 381.986(7)(a) of the Florida Statutes, which still calls for annual renewal in 2026.
When should I renew the card?
Renew inside the state's renewal window. Renewal applications can be submitted beginning 45 days before the card's expiration date. The Office of Medical Marijuana Use asks patients not to apply before the window opens.
Renewing the card does not renew your certification. Your physician must also re-evaluate you on the state's schedule: at least once every 30 weeks.
What changed in July 2026?
The state added a new condition for applying and renewing. Caregivers must also be linked to a valid patient in the Registry to apply.
In practice, this ties your card renewal to your physician visits. If your certification has lapsed, book a re-evaluation first, then renew the card.
Can I use my Florida card in another state, or another state's card in Florida?
No, not in Florida. Florida does not accept out-of-state medical marijuana cards.
If you are traveling, check the rules of the state you are visiting. Each state decides whether it accepts visitors' cards.
Do caregivers need their own card?
Yes. A caregiver must hold their own caregiver ID card. A caregiver must be a Florida resident age 21 or older, agree in writing to help, complete a state caregiver course (renewed every two years), pass a background screening unless a close relative of the patient, hold a caregiver ID card, and generally assist only one patient. A caregiver cannot be a qualified physician or have ties to a dispensary, and may not be paid beyond actual expenses.
A patient can also serve as a caregiver for someone else, but must apply separately for each card.
